🔱 Shri Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameshwaram
📖 Overview & Sacred Significance
Located on the conch-shaped Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, Ramanathaswamy Temple holds an illustrious dual status in Sanatan Dharma: it is celebrated both as the southern anchor of the all-India Bada Char Dham and as the southernmost of the twelve sacred Shiva Jyotirlingas. Here, the devotion of Lord Rama (an incarnation of Vishnu) to Lord Shiva weaves an eternal bridge uniting Shaivism and Vaishnavism.
According to the Ramayana, upon defeating the demon king Ravana in Lanka and rescuing Sita Devi, Lord Rama wished to perform expiation for the sin of slaying a Brahmin (Brahmahatya Dosha, as Ravana was a learned Vedic scholar and grandson of Rishi Pulastya). Rama dispatched Hanuman to Mount Kailash to fetch a consecrated lingam from Lord Shiva. When Hanuman was delayed by the immense distance, the auspicious astrological hour (Muhurat) drew near; Sita Devi gently sculpted a lingam out of the pristine sands of the seashore with her own hands. This sand lingam, known as the Ramalingam, was consecrated by Lord Rama.
When Hanuman returned with the lingam from Kailash (the Vishwalingam), he was despondent to find the puja already underway. Seeing Hanuman’s sorrow, Lord Rama decreed that the Vishwalingam brought by Hanuman would forever be worshiped first before devotees pay homage to the Ramalingam—a sacred custom faithfully practiced to this very day!
Architecturally, Ramanathaswamy is world-renowned for having the longest pillared corridor in the world. The outer third corridor measures an astounding 1,220 meters in total length with 1,212 intricately sculpted sandstone pillars, demonstrating the peerless stone-carving mastery of the Pandya and Sethupathi kings.
💧 The Sacred Ritual of the 22 Teerthams
A pilgrimage to Rameshwaram is incomplete without the traditional purifying bath (Snana) in the temple’s 22 sacred wells (Teerthams), each infused with distinct mineral qualities, temperatures, and spiritual significance:
- Step 1: Agniteertham Dip: Pilgrims begin early in the morning with a holy bath in the calm, wave-less waters of the Bay of Bengal directly in front of the eastern temple tower.
- Step 2: The 22 Inner Wells: In wet clothes, devotees proceed into the temple compound where temple sevaks draw sweet freshwater from each of the 22 consecrated wells (including Mahalakshmi, Gayatri, Savitri, Saraswati, Gauri, Shankha, Chakra, Surya, Chandra, and Koti Teertham) and pour it over the pilgrim's head.
- Step 3: Change of Attire: Devotees must change into dry traditional attire before entering the main sanctum sanctorum for darshan of the Ramalingam and Goddess Parvathavardhini.
