Understanding the Two "Char Dhams" in India
One of the most frequent points of confusion for pilgrims is distinguishing between the two distinct Char Dham circuits. Both hold immense sanctity in Hindu philosophy, but they belong to different geographic scales and historical origins:
- Bada Char Dham (All-India Four Cardinal Cardinal Points): Established in the 8th century CE by Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya to unify Bharatvarsha across the four cardinal directions β Badrinath in the North (Uttarakhand), Rameshwaram in the South (Tamil Nadu), Puri Jagannath in the East (Odisha), and Dwarkadhish in the West (Gujarat).
- Chota Char Dham (Himalayan Uttarakhand Circuit): Located wholly within the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, encompassing four high-altitude sanctuaries: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Traditionally undertaken from West to East (Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath).
