What is a Jyotirlinga and Why are There Twelve?

The word Jyotirlinga stems from two Sanskrit roots: Jyoti (meaning "radiant, infinite light") and Linga (meaning "symbol, mark, or sign of the formless divine"). In Hindu cosmology, a Jyotirlinga is not a mere stone sculpted by human hands; it represents an eternal, self-manifested column of infinite cosmic radiance where the supreme formless consciousness (Sadashiva) broke through the earthly realm.

According to the Shiva Purana, a cosmic dispute once arose between Lord Brahma (the Creator) and Lord Vishnu (the Preserver) regarding who was supreme. To quell their pride, Lord Shiva pierced through all three worlds as an immeasurable, blazing pillar of light (the Jyotirstambha). Neither Brahma could find its crown nor Vishnu its base. Wherever this divine cosmic radiance solidified into physical stone to bless humanity, those twelve sanctified spots became celebrated as the Dvadasa Jyotirlingas. Reciting the sacred hymn composed by Adi Shankaracharya—"Saurashtre Somanatham cha..."—bestows liberation from karmic rebirth.
