📖 Overview & Sacred Significance
Located in the historic village of Verul near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) in Maharashtra, Shree Grishneshwar (also revered as Ghushmeshwar or Kusumeshwar) holds a place of profound devotional completion in Sanatan Dharma: it is celebrated as the twelfth and final Jyotirlinga mentioned in the sacred Dvadasa Jyotirlinga Stotram ("Ghushmesham cha Shivalaye..."). Veneration here formally culminates the sacred circumambulation of all twelve sanctuaries.
According to the Shiva Purana, a pious devotee named Ghushma was married to a Brahmin named Sudharma. Being childless, Sudharma was married to Ghushma's sister, Sudeha, who bore a handsome son. Ghushma loved the boy as her own and made 101 clay Shiva lingams every single day, worshiping them and releasing them into the village pond (Shivalaya). Overcome by bitter jealousy, Sudeha secretly murdered the young boy in his sleep and threw his body into the same pond. When the family woke in horror to find blood upon the sheets, Ghushma remained completely undisturbed in her morning prayers, declaring: "He who gave the child shall protect him." When she finished her prayers at the water's edge, her son miraculously stepped out of the pond alive and radiant! Lord Shiva manifested before her in infinite cosmic light; when Ghushma pleaded for forgiveness even for her wicked sister, the compassionate Lord agreed to stay in the pond as Ghushmeshwar to grant boons of progeny and peace to all devotees.
The present exquisite five-tiered temple of warm red and pink basalt stone was rebuilt in the 18th century by the saintly Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. It features a soaring pyramidal Shikhara adorned with carvings of the ten avatars of Vishnu (Dashavatara), courtly musicians, and auspicious kalash urns.

Aurangabad Railway Station (AWB): ~30 km away. High-speed Vande Bharat and express trains connect directly from Mumbai CSMT (via Manmad) and Pune.

October to March (Winter): Pleasant, dry weather with daytime temperatures around 18°C to 28°C. Perfect for spending the morning at Grishneshwar and the afternoon exploring the open-air Ellora rock caves.
Maha Shivratri: The grandest festival celebrated at Verul with night-long bhajans, palki processions, and thousands of devotees offering milk and flowers.

⚠️ Important Rules & Sparsh Darshan Protocols
- Strict Dress Code for Sanctum Entry: Male devotees wishing to enter the inner garbhagriha to touch the lingam or perform abhishek must remove their shirts, vests, and belts, entering bare-chested wearing traditional dhotis or trousers.
