📖 Overview & Sacred Significance
Nestled picturesquely at the verdant base of the sacred Brahmagiri mountain in the Western Ghats near Nashik, Trimbakeshwar is singularly unique among all twelve Jyotirlingas. Unlike all other shrines where the lingam embodies Lord Shiva exclusively, the sanctum here houses an aperture containing three natural thumb-sized lingams embodying the supreme Hindu Trinity: Lord Brahma (the Creator), Lord Vishnu (the Preserver), and Lord Shiva (the Destroyer). It is this divine tripartite manifestation that bestows the sacred name Trimbakeshwar ("The Three-Eyed Lord of the Trinity").
According to the Shiva Purana, the revered sage Gautama Rishi resided here with his wife Ahilya during a protracted 24-year drought. Through severe austerities, Lord Varuna blessed Gautama with an inexhaustible pit of grain that fed all sages. Jealous rival ascetics deceitfully planted a phantom cow in his fields, which miraculously collapsed when Gautama tried to herd it away with a blade of grass. Distressed by the thought of Go-Hatya (cow slaughter), Gautama worshiped Lord Shiva atop Brahmagiri. Pleased by his purity of heart, Shiva commanded the heavenly river Ganga to descend to cleanse the land. The river manifested here as the sacred Godavari (Dakshin Ganga), and Lord Shiva, alongside Brahma and Vishnu, agreed to reside eternally at its source.
The present monumental black basalt stone temple was commissioned by the illustrious Maratha ruler Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nana Saheb) between 1755 and 1786 CE. It features intricate stone friezes depicting warriors, floral arabesques, and divine deities, surrounded by a massive protective stone courtyard wall.

Just 400 meters from the temple stands the holy Kushavarta Kund, a geometric stone water tank where Sage Gautama trapped the elusive currents of the Godavari using a ring of sacred Kusha grass. This tank is revered as the birthplace of the Godavari River on the earthly plains and serves as the principal bathing venue for millions of ascetics during the historic Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
