📖 Overview & Sacred Significance
Crowning the flat crest of the ancient Nallamala forested hills in Andhra Pradesh above the swirling gorges of the sacred Krishna River, Srisailam is reverently acclaimed as the Kailash of the South (Dakshina Kailash). It occupies a singularly exalted pedestal in Sanatan Dharma as one of only three sanctuaries in all of Bharat (alongside Varanasi and Ujjain) that is honored simultaneously as both a Maha Jyotirlinga (Lord Mallikarjuna) and an illustrious Maha Shakti Peeth (Goddess Bhramaramba Devi, where the neck of Maa Sati is believed to have fallen).
According to the Shiva Purana, after Lord Ganesha won the cosmic race to marry first by circumambulating his parents (whom he considered the embodiment of the entire universe), his elder brother Lord Kartikeya (Murugan) felt aggrieved and departed Mount Kailash in ascetic solitude, taking up residence atop the remote Krauncha mountain here. Yearning to see their beloved son, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati manifested here on the hill. Parvati took the name Mallika (signifying the fragrant wild jasmine flower), while Shiva manifested as Arjuna (pure white light). United upon the sacred hill, they became venerated eternally as Mallikarjuna.
The monumental fortress-like stone temple was extensively patronized by the Kakatiya dynasty, the Reddi kings of Kondaveedu, and the great Vijayanagara emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, who erected the grand Raja Gopuram in 1520 CE. The massive stone courtyard perimeter walls are renowned for hundreds of relief friezes depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and ancient hunting expeditions.
